Finding an Internship

The School of Public Health is currently working on creating Spring 2019 internship opportunities for undergraduate students that should become available in late November/Early December 2018. Announcements with internship descriptions will be posted and made available to students through various methods including Blackboard, Email and List-serve or directly with the Field Placement Advisor.

In addition, students are encouraged to conduct their own search. Below are some tips on finding and securing an internship:

  • View the List of Field Sites with existing Service Learning Agreements. These are the sites that have hosted students in the past and already have an established Agreement with the SPH which provides liability coverage for the student (a requirement that must be met to begin working at a field site). Simply reach out to the contact listed and inquire about opportunities. You must sign in with your SDSU email address to view this file.

  • Subscribe to the SPH Graduate Mailing List for announcements about new potential field opportunities. While this mailing list is primarily targeted to graduate students, there may be internship opportunity postings that are open to undergraduate students. This also is a good way to learn about local public health or related organizations.

  • Network and get involved. Talk to friends, other students, faculty and public health professionals about your interests. Get involved in campus and community groups, attend on-campus or community professional development events or workshops (i.e. career panels, job fairs, presentations, etc.). You will increase your chances of finding a great job/internship opportunity!

  • Set up an appointment with the Field Placement Advisor to assist in assessing your skills, strengths and interests to inform the direction of your search. The advisor is knowledgeable on public health career pathways across the various disciplines and can provide guidance on how to find/secure an internship that will be a good fit with your academic and/or career goals.
